The Process

A momentous project.

This is one of the largest transit projects in the U.S. and unlike any in Austin’s history. It’s going to revolutionize how we get around, but it’s not going to happen overnight. Integrating a world-class light rail system into our existing infrastructure will be a long and complex process. Learn more about the major steps of the process and see the latest updates below.

The Steps

1.

Project was approved by Austin voters.
ATP was formed to implement the light rail and assembled a team of transit experts.

2.

Conducted a community-driven process to determine the project goals and formalize the Light Rail Implementation Plan.

Completed preliminary design and engineering, environmental review, delivery planning, and key steps to fulfill federal funding requirements.

ATP is currently working on detailed designs, preconstruction planning, and field investigations while advancing federal funding requirements and local permitting.

5.

Construction & Testing

2027 – 2033

Utilities will be relocated, a bridge across Ladybird Lake will be constructed, and streetscapes will be rebuilt to include light rail tracks, stations, vehicle lanes, and shaded pedestrian and bike paths. Trains will be manufactured, delivered, and tested.

Open for Service

Austin’s light rail will officially open with 9.8
miles of track, stretching from 38th on Guadelupe, through downtown to South Congress and East Riverside.

Schedule is for planning purposes, and final dates are contingent on contractor input and federal funding process.
