Designing with art in mind.
The light rail will be more than a new way to get around Austin. It will also be a new way to experience art. Everything we’re designing must consider those who will experience it — from the architecture and construction of stations to the pathways and landscaping along the line. Public art can also have a big impact on that experience, as it connects to Austin culture and creates spaces for people to come together.
Designing Austin’s light rail with early input from artists will help make every journey on the light rail as meaningful as the destination.
Things to Know
Art Integrated into the Line
Art is being considered early in the planning and design process for the light rail to ensure the art is truly integrated into these community spaces.
Early Input From Artists
We’ll be partnering with artists during the design integration process, from development to future installation.
Permanent & Ongoing Opportunities
There will be multiple sites for permanent and temporary artworks at key points along the line.
Open to All Kinds of Artists
There will be opportunities for artists at various experience levels — from emerging to established — and art expressed across many different media.
Art of All Types
Art will span typologies, including integrated architectural elements, sculpture, light and media installations, landscape, functional and experiential works, and murals.
An Economic Driver
Art creates spaces for neighbors to connect, attracts new visitors, and drives traffic to local businesses — contributing to the economic vitality of an area.
